For some time, I have sensed the Lord impressing upon my heart to share about angels, particularly the angelic help He provides for His people. Today, as my beloved home nation of Trinidad and Tobago celebrates 64 years of Independence, I feel especially led to speak on this subject and explore what Scripture reveals about the ministry of angels and the ways God sends them to fulfill His purposes in the lives of His people.
There is much about the angelic realm that remains unseen to us, yet the Bible makes it clear that this realm is very real. While Scripture does not give us every detail concerning how angels are assigned to individual believers throughout their lives, it does reveal that God sends His angels on behalf of His people. From childhood through adulthood, we can rest in the assurance that our heavenly Father is fully capable of providing whatever divine assistance is necessary for us to fulfill His purpose in the earth.
In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word commonly translated as angel is mal’akh, which means “messenger” or “one who is sent.” In the New Testament, the Greek word angelos carries the same basic meaning: “messenger” or “one sent.”
Angels are created spiritual beings who belong to God. They are distinct from human beings, although Scripture shows that they can sometimes appear in human form. They existed before the foundations of the physical world were completed, for Job 38:4-7 describes the heavenly beings rejoicing as God laid the foundations of the earth.
As believers, our greatest Helper is the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus called the Comforter, Counselor, and Helper. He lives within those who belong to Christ and leads us into truth. Yet Scripture also reveals another dimension of God’s provision: He sends angels to minister according to His sovereign will.
GOD SENDS HIS ANGELS TO HELP HIS PEOPLE
How do we know that God provides angelic assistance? Scripture repeatedly reveals that God commands His angels to guard, protect, deliver, strengthen, and minister to His people. Psalm 91:11-12 declares, “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” Psalm 34:7 also declares, “The angel of the LORD encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them.”
These are beautiful reminders that the protection of God extends far beyond what our natural eyes can see. There may be moments when God is working on our behalf in ways we never recognize. Throughout both the Old and New Testaments, we find accounts of angels guarding, warning, rescuing, strengthening, directing, and assisting the people of God.
When God was leading the children of Israel toward the land He had promised them, He told Moses in Exodus 23:20, “Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.” When Daniel was thrown into the lions’ den, he testified in Daniel 6:22, “My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me.”
In the New Testament, Jesus Himself gives us a fascinating glimpse into angelic ministry when speaking about little children. Matthew 18:10 records Him saying, “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven.”
Acts also contains dramatic examples of angelic intervention. In Acts 5:19, an angel opened the doors of the prison and released the apostles. Later, in Acts 12:7, an angel appeared beside Peter while he was imprisoned. His chains fell from his hands, the prison doors opened, and he was led to freedom.
Hebrews 1:14 gives one of the clearest descriptions of angelic ministry: “Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?”
Angels therefore operate under the authority of God as His servants, accomplishing assignments that support His divine purposes.
THE DIFFERENT ORDERS AND RANKS OF ANGELS
Scripture gives us glimpses of different kinds of heavenly beings and differing levels of authority within the angelic realm. However, the Bible does not provide a complete organizational chart of heaven, so wisdom is necessary whenever we discuss angelic rankings.
The Bible refers to cherubim, who are associated with the presence and holiness of God. After Adam and Eve were removed from the Garden of Eden, cherubim were stationed at its entrance in Genesis 3:24. Images of cherubim were also placed over the mercy seat of the Ark of the Covenant.
Isaiah 6 introduces us to seraphim, powerful heavenly beings surrounding the throne of God and continually proclaiming His holiness.
Michael is specifically identified in Jude 9 as the archangel, and Daniel describes him as one of the chief princes involved in spiritual conflict. Revelation 12 also portrays Michael leading angels in battle.
Gabriel appears as a divine messenger in both Daniel and Luke. He brought important revelation to Daniel and later announced to Mary that she would give birth to Jesus Christ.
These passages reveal order, authority, function, and differing assignments within the heavenly realm, while also reminding us to remain within what Scripture clearly teaches.
THE ROLE OF ANGELS
The Bible reveals several important functions that angels perform in the service of God.
1. Delivering Messages
The very meaning of the word angel points to the role of a messenger. Throughout Scripture, angels were sent by God to communicate His instructions, warnings, and announcements.
Gabriel delivered one of the greatest announcements in human history when he appeared to Mary and told her that she would give birth to Jesus Christ. Luke 1:26-31 describes this extraordinary encounter.
Angels also communicated through dreams. In Matthew 1:20, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and reassured him concerning Mary and the child she was carrying.
God therefore used angels at significant moments in biblical history to communicate messages connected to His redemptive purposes.
2. Worshipping and Glorifying God
Angels are first and foremost servants and worshippers of God. Their attention is centered upon Him. Isaiah 6:3 describes the seraphim surrounding the throne of God and crying: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!”
Revelation 5:11-13 gives another breath-taking picture of countless angels surrounding the throne and declaring the worthiness of the Lamb. The angelic realm continually bears witness to the greatness, holiness, majesty, and sovereignty of God.
3. Protecting and Ministering to God’s People
Angels are described as ministering spirits whom God sends in connection with those who inherit salvation. We have already seen this through Daniel’s deliverance from the lions’ den and Peter’s supernatural release from prison.
Another remarkable example occurs in 2 Kings 19:35, when an angel of the Lord struck the Assyrian forces that had threatened Jerusalem. The deliverance demonstrated that God was fully capable of defending His people against an enemy that appeared overwhelming in the natural realm.
Angelic ministry may involve protection, deliverance, guidance, strengthening, or other forms of assistance according to the purpose of God.
4. Executing the Judgments of God
Angels also appear throughout Scripture as agents through whom God executes judgment. Examples can be found throughout both the Old and New Testaments. The book of Revelation especially reveals angels carrying out divine judgments during the events surrounding the end of the age.
Revelation 16, for example, describes seven angels being instructed to pour out the bowls of the wrath of God upon the earth. This reminds us that angels are more than comforting spiritual figures. They are powerful servants of the holy God who faithfully execute His commands.
5. Waging Spiritual Warfare
Scripture also reveals angels participating in conflict within the unseen spiritual realm. Daniel 10 gives us one of the clearest biblical glimpses into this reality. An angel explains to Daniel that spiritual opposition had resisted him until Michael came to assist.
The passage reveals that there are dimensions of spiritual conflict taking place beyond our natural perception. Revelation 12:7 provides another striking example: “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought.”
Although Ephesians 6:12 primarily describes the spiritual conflict believers face, Daniel and Revelation show clearly that angelic beings also participate in spiritual warfare according to the purposes of God.
WHAT ANGELS ARE NOT
As fascinating as the subject of angels may be, biblical boundaries are essential. Angels are servants of God. They are never presented in Scripture as spiritual beings placed at our personal command.
We do not direct angels independently of God. Prayer is directed to God. We seek His will, His protection, His intervention, and His guidance. God determines when, where, and how angelic assistance is dispatched. Psalm 103:20 says, “Bless the LORD, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word.”
Their allegiance is to God. This distinction protects us from becoming fascinated with angels to the point where our attention shifts away from Christ.
1. Angels Are Never to Be Worshipped
The Bible gives strong warnings concerning the worship of angels. In Colossians 2:18, the Apostle Paul cautions believers against those who become consumed with visions and the worship of angels. Revelation 19:10 gives an even clearer example. When John fell before an angel, the angel immediately corrected him and warned, “See that you do not do that! I am your fellow servant… Worship God!”
That response tells us everything we need to know. Angels may be magnificent, powerful, and their presence may be overwhelming. But worship belongs to God alone, and our attention must always return to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
2. Human Beings Do Not Become Angels
Angels and human beings are separate orders within God’s creation. People do not become angels when they die. Scripture presents redeemed human beings and angels as distinct groups. Angels serve God in their appointed roles, while redeemed humanity has its own extraordinary identity and inheritance in Christ.
This is important because popular culture sometimes portrays deceased loved ones as becoming guardian angels. While this may sound comforting, it is different from what Scripture teaches.
ANGELS MAY BE PRESENT WITHOUT OUR AWARENESS
With these biblical foundations in place, we can better appreciate some of the extraordinary angelic encounters recorded throughout Scripture. Hebrews 13:2 contains a fascinating statement: “Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some have unwittingly entertained angels.”
Imagine interacting with someone and discovering in eternity that the encounter involved an angel sent by God. There may be supernatural interventions taking place around us that we never recognize.
People have testified of surviving serious road accidents, life threatening circumstances, moments of extraordinary danger, and situations where events seemed to manifest in ways that defied reasonable explanation. We should exercise discernment concerning individual testimonies, but Scripture certainly gives us room to believe that God can intervene through angelic ministry.
There are also people who describe moments when they became unusually aware of the spiritual realm, sometimes through a strong sense of peace, an unexpected movement of air, a fragrance, a dream, or another unusual experience.
Experiences themselves should never become our foundation for doctrine. Scripture remains our standard. Yet neither should we assume that the unseen realm has suddenly ceased to exist simply because we cannot ordinarily perceive it.
SOME OF MY PERSONAL ENCOUNTERS
I have had several experiences that I understood to involve angelic activity, primarily through dreams and open visions. I share these experiences as personal testimony rather than as the standard by which anyone else should measure their relationship with God.
One encounter that remains particularly significant to me occurred around 2013, when I was preparing to travel to Israel as part of a group tour. At the time, I was experiencing considerable difficulty obtaining a travel loan because of circumstances connected to my father’s vehicle loan. There was a great deal of deliberation concerning my credit standing and whether the financing would be approved. During that period, I received a vision in my sleep.
I saw what appeared to be a gigantic hand stretching outward from the clouds. In the hand was a great golden sceptre. Then I saw five or more objects resembling balls of fire being released from the clouds.
As I looked more closely, enormous wings unfolded and feet appeared. What I had initially perceived as balls of fire appeared to be angelic beings. They moved rapidly toward the city of Port of Spain, in the direction connected with the banking matter I was facing.
What stood out to me was the sense that God Himself was dispatching help concerning the situation. During that week, when I later went to the bank, my travel loan was approved, and the issue surrounding my father's vehicle loan was also resolved.
For me, that experience became a clear reminder that God can be working behind circumstances long before we see the answer in the natural realm.
“The I AM Has Sent Me”
There was another season in my life when I sensed that I was moving into a new level of spiritual growth and responsibility in the Lord. During that period, I received what I would describe as a dream that transitioned into an open vision.
As I came out of the dream and opened my eyes, I saw the outline of what appeared to be an enormous angelic being, perhaps twelve feet tall or more. I was unable to move or speak. Then I heard a loud, thunderous voice declare, “The I AM has sent me!”
Those words remained deeply impressed upon me. My understanding at the time was that this angel had been sent by God in connection with a particular purpose, assignment, or season that I was entering.
There is a familiar saying within Christian circles that “there is a devil on every level.” While that phrase is certainly not Scripture, it attempts to express something believers often recognize: new levels of responsibility can bring new kinds of opposition and challenges. Yet our focus should never become the enemy, for our confidence remains in the God who is already present at every level.
GREATER ASSIGNMENT, GREATER DEPENDENCE ON GOD
As we grow spiritually, mature in Christ, and move into greater levels of responsibility, we will encounter challenges we may never have experienced in previous seasons. This should steer us into greater dependence upon God rather than be in fear.
I personally believe that God provides whatever level of heavenly assistance is necessary for the assignments He gives His people. Scripture clearly reveals different levels of angelic authority and different assignments within the heavenly realm. Daniel 10, for example, gives us a glimpse of powerful spiritual beings involved in matters concerning nations and kingdoms.
However God chooses to arrange that assistance, our responsibility remains the same: walk closely with Him, obey His Word, listen to the Holy Spirit, pray according to His will, and trust Him with everything occurring in both the visible and invisible realms.
There is no need for us to know the name of every angel around us, to see them with our natural eyes, or to pursue encounters with them. Our focus and pursuit should always remain centered on God, trusting Him to reveal whatever is necessary according to His will and purpose.
If He chooses to reveal something concerning the angelic realm, we receive it with humility, discernment, and biblical wisdom. If we never consciously see an angel during our lifetime, His promises remain equally true.
OUR CONFIDENCE IS IN THE GOD WHO SENDS THEM
Angels are powerful, but God is Almighty. They are servants, while Jesus Christ is Lord. Angels may bring messages and carry out divine assignments, but the Holy Spirit lives within the believer as our Helper and Guide. They may also engage in battles within realms we cannot see, yet every victory ultimately belongs to Jesus Christ.
Perhaps this is one of the greatest lessons we can learn from the biblical revelation of angels. God has resources available to Him that extend beyond what our natural eyes can perceive.
There may have been moments in your life when danger came close, yet somehow you were preserved. There may have been situations where doors opened unexpectedly, circumstances shifted, or help appeared at precisely the right moment.
You may never know on this side of eternity everything God did behind the scenes. Yet you can know the One who was watching over you. Psalm 121:7-8 declares, “The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore.” Our confidence therefore rests neither in angels nor in supernatural experiences. It rests in God Himself.
The wonderful truth is that the God who commands heaven’s armies is also our Father. He sees what we cannot see. He knows the battles we have yet to encounter. He knows the assignment He has placed upon our lives, and He possesses every resource necessary to bring His purposes to completion.
So while we may indeed have allies and friends in high places, our eyes remain fixed upon the Highest One of all. Jesus Christ remains at the center, and all glory belongs to God. Heaven stands ready to respond whenever the King gives the command. This is why we can take courage in the words of Elisha in 2 Kings 6:16: “Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your faithfulness, protection, and constant care over our lives. Thank You for the unseen help of the heavenly host, including the guardian angels and armies of heaven You dispatch according to Your will and assign to carry out Your purposes concerning Your people. We are grateful for every way You have protected, strengthened, guided, and preserved us, even in moments when we were completely unaware of what was taking place in the unseen realm.
Keep our hearts centered on Jesus, our ears attentive to the Holy Spirit, and our lives firmly grounded in Your Word. Give us wisdom, discernment, humility, and courage as we walk in the assignments You have entrusted to us. Help us to remember that You go before us, You surround us with Your presence, and You remain sovereign over every visible and invisible battle. May all glory, honor, and praise belong to You alone.
