The Coming Kingdom

What Will the Saints Be Doing During the Millennium Reign?

Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.” Revelation 20:6.

The Millennium Reign, the one-thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ upon the earth, has always carried an air of mystery, wonder, and anticipation. It is one of the most awe-inspiring prophetic promises in all of Scripture, yet strangely, it is a subject few truly stop to contemplate. Ahead of the chaos of the Tribulation, the outpouring of God’s wrath, and Armageddon itself, there awaits a glorious era unlike anything the world has ever known: the visible Kingdom of Jesus Christ established upon the earth.

Many believers often think of eternity as existing only in Heaven, overlooking the extraordinary truth revealed in Scripture: Christ Himself will physically reign on the earth for a thousand years, and afterward there will be a new heaven and a new earth where we will reign with Him forever. The King who once wore a crown of thorns will return wearing many crowns, and the kingdoms of this world will become the Kingdom of our God and of His Christ.

The word millennium comes from the Latin mille, meaning “thousand,” and annus, meaning “year,” literally referring to a thousand-year period. Revelation 20:1-6 speaks directly of this reign, but the prophetic vision stretches throughout the entire Word of God like golden threads woven through eternity.

The prophets saw glimpses of it. They wrote of a world transformed under the rulership of the Messiah:

1. Isaiah prophesied in Isaiah 9:6-7 that “the government will be upon His shoulder” and that Christ would reign upon David’s throne with judgment and justice.

2. In Isaiah 11:6-9, the prophet Isaiah also described a world so filled with peace that even creation itself would be restored: The wolf dwelling with the lamb, and the earth filled with the knowledge of the Lord, “as the waters cover the sea”.

3. Micah foresaw nations abandoning war entirely, beating “their swords into plowshares” and learning war no more. You can read this in Micah 4:2-4.

4. Daniel declared in Daniel 2:44 that the God of Heaven would establish a Kingdom that would never be destroyed and would consume every earthly kingdom.

5. Isaiah 65:17-25 paints a breathtaking picture of restoration, longevity, prosperity, and peace upon the earth.

6. Zechariah revealed that nations would journey yearly to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of Hosts, and observe the Feast of Tabernacles. Read Zechariah 14:16.

This is the prophetic unveiling of a coming Kingdom, and it is the reign of Jesus Christ upon the earth in righteousness, justice, peace, and glory.

One notable pastor and Bible teacher, Dr. David Jeremiah, describes the Millennium Reign as a literal future period following the Tribulation and Armageddon in which Jesus Christ rules from Jerusalem. He explains that this age will be marked by worldwide peace, environmental restoration, righteousness, and the binding of Satan himself. It will be a world finally governed under the perfect authority of the King of Kings.

Imagine a world completely free from corruption, deception, and injustice, a world where righteousness governs every nation and truth flows freely without distortion or darkness. Imagine an earth no longer crippled by sin, violence, greed, and brokenness, but one filled with peace, order, and the perfect justice of God. Most astonishing of all, imagine a world where the presence of Jesus Christ is no longer perceived only through faith, but visibly manifested for all to see as He reigns openly as King over the nations.

Revelation 20:1-3 reveals that for one thousand years, Satan will be bound in the bottomless pit, unable to deceive the nations. The tempter who influenced kingdoms, corrupted societies, and blinded humanity throughout history will be restrained. The earth will experience what it has long groaned for since the fall of man: the righteous rule of Jesus Christ.

But perhaps one of the most intriguing questions is this:

What will the saints of God be doing during this thousand-year reign?

Scripture does not leave us without insight. In one of his Sunday morning sermons, Dr. David Jeremiah once made a profound and intriguing statement regarding the Millennium: “The 1000-year reign. It will be a fulfillment of what man has tried to accomplish but couldn't.” That thought alone awakens the imagination. What assignments will God entrust to His redeemed people? What purposes, ministries, creativity, leadership, worship, and service await the saints in the age to come?

Though we may not know every detail of daily life during the Millennium, the Word of God reveals several remarkable truths.

Resurrected Saints and Believers

The resurrected saints will actively participate in Christ’s Kingdom. Revelation 20:6 declares:

They shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”

Those who take part in the first resurrection are called blessed and holy. The second death has no power over them. They are entrusted with divine responsibility and Kingdom authority under the rulership of Christ Himself.

Some of the roles the saints may fulfill include:

1. Governing with Christ2 Timothy 2:12 and Revelation 5:10 states that Believers will assist in administering the government of God’s Kingdom upon the earth. Scripture repeatedly points to the saints reigning with Christ. Positions of responsibility and stewardship may be entrusted according to faithfulness.

2. Restoring Righteous Order – The earth, long scarred by sin, rebellion, corruption, and injustice, will experience restoration. The saints may serve in various leadership and administrative capacities to help establish righteous conditions across nations.

3. Serving as Priests Unto God – As priests of God and Christ, believers will draw near to Him continually in worship, ministry, service, and spiritual leadership. The knowledge of the Lord will fill the earth, and the saints will likely play a role in teaching and guiding nations in the ways of God.

4. Worship and Fellowship in the Presence of Christ – Perhaps the greatest wonder of all is this: Jesus Himself will dwell among humanity. The saints will live and reign in His presence, beholding the King not through dim understanding, but face to face.

So, does this sound familiar? In many ways, all that we do here on earth is preparation for what we will one day do in the Millennium Reign of Christ. Every act of service, opportunity to lead with integrity, moments spent worshipping God, teaching others, walking in obedience, and stewarding the gifts He has placed within us may very well be shaping us for future responsibilities in His coming Kingdom. The governing roles, the restoration of righteous order, the ministry of priests unto God, and the continual worship and fellowship in the presence of Christ all reflect the very things believers are called to cultivate even now in this present life.

God does not waste our seasons of preparation. The spiritual gifts, talents, wisdom, leadership abilities, creativity, and callings He has entrusted to each believer are not without eternal purpose. Scripture consistently reveals that faithfulness on earth carries eternal significance in the Kingdom to come. Those who faithfully steward what God has placed in their hands today may be entrusted with even greater responsibility in the age to come. Jesus Himself illustrated this truth in Luke 19:17 when He declared, “Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.”

That single verse alone should profoundly challenge the way we prioritize our lives, our time, and our devotion to God. It reminds us that our daily obedience should not be insignificant in our eyes, and that the hidden places of faithfulness matter deeply to God. The prayers we pray, the people we serve, the character we develop, the wisdom we gain, and the gifts we nurture may all be part of God’s preparation process for our future roles in His eternal Kingdom. What we often view as ordinary moments that we take for granted on earth may actually be training grounds for reigning with Christ in the Millennium.

Those Who Survive the Tribulation

Scripture also states that those who survive the Tribulation and enter the Millennium in mortal bodies will continue normal earthly life. Isaiah 65:21-23 indicates that they will build homes, plant vineyards, marry, have children, and populate the earth under Christ’s righteous reign.

And yet, even in such a glorious age, humanity will still possess free will. At the close of the thousand years, Revelation 20:7-9 declares that Satan will be released briefly and will once again deceive many, revealing that even perfect external conditions cannot transform the human heart apart from true surrender to God.

The Millennium Reign stands as a breathtaking testimony to the faithfulness of God. Every promise spoken through the prophets will come to pass. Every kingdom of man will bow before the Kingdom of Christ. The earth that once rejected Him will witness His glory.

And perhaps the greatest wonder of all, my friends, is that the story of humanity ends in restoration. It culminates with Jesus Christ reigning triumphantly as King upon the throne, establishing His righteous Kingdom upon the earth. It ends with the redeemed saints reigning beside Him in glory, fulfilling the divine purposes for which they were called. Above all, it ends with the eternal plans and promises of God unfolding perfectly and completely, just as He ordained from the very beginning of time.

Say this prayer with me:

Heavenly Father,

We thank You for the glorious hope found in Your Word and for the promise of the coming Kingdom of Jesus Christ. Thank You for reminding us that this present world is temporary, but Your eternal Kingdom will stand forever. Lord, help us to live with eternity in view. Teach us to set our hearts on things above and not become consumed by the distractions, pressures, and temporary pursuits of this world.

Father, align our priorities with Your will. Help us to seek first Your Kingdom, to walk in obedience, to serve faithfully, and to steward every gift, opportunity, and calling You have placed within our hands. May our lives reflect wisdom, humility, integrity, and devotion to You in all that we do.

Search our hearts, O God, and remove anything that competes with Your presence. Teach us to treasure what is eternal more than what is temporary. Let our worship be sincere, our service be faithful, and our hearts remain fully surrendered to Jesus Christ, our coming King.

Prepare us, Lord, not only for life here on earth, but also for the eternal purposes You have ordained for Your people. May we be found faithful in every season, eagerly awaiting the glorious return of our Savior and King.

In Jesus’ mighty name we pray,

Amen.
